shipping from the eastern passage of the group, because navigators would depend upon such lights to assist them in the setting of courses and the taking of observations. As things are at present, the endeavour of navigating officers is to give the Paracels group a wide berth, in spite of which precaution, however, numerous wrecks bear witness to the fact that the dangerous character of this neighbourhood cannot always be safely avoided.

I shall be interested to be advised in due course

as to whether it is possible to minimise the existing dangers of the Paracels zone by the establishment, in the interests of navigation, of a light or lights as an

aid to mariners in that quarter.
